NTPC Limited has officially announced the execution of a Termination Agreement on May 7, 2026, involving the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and NTPC EDMC Waste Solutions Private Limited (NEWS). This strategic move marks the termination of a Joint Venture Agreement originally dated June 11, 2019. As part of this agreement, NTPC will acquire MCD’s 26% shareholding in NEWS, effectively transitioning the entity into a wholly-owned subsidiary of the power major.
The acquisition involves the purchase of 52,000 equity shares at a face value of ₹10 per share, totaling a cash consideration of ₹5,20,000. NEWS, which was incorporated in 2020 to handle waste management and energy generation, reported a turnover of ₹1.28 Lakhs for the 2024-25 fiscal year. NTPC intends to consolidate its “Waste to Wealth” business through this acquisition, with the transaction expected to be completed within the first quarter of FY 2026-27.
NTPC Limited is India’s largest power conglomerate, founded in 1975 to accelerate the nation’s power development. The company has evolved from a thermal-centric generator into a diversified energy giant, targeting 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. Recent 2025 updates highlight NTPC’s leadership in green hydrogen, such as the seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at Simhadri, and its push into nuclear energy through a joint venture with NPCIL. In late 2024, its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) completed an IPO to fund its massive solar and wind pipelines.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2025, NTPC reported a consolidated revenue from operations of ₹2,959 Crore, representing a 7.8% increase compared to ₹2,745 Crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The company’s net profit for the same period rose by 10.9% to ₹498 Crore, up from ₹449 Crore YoY. These results were bolstered by operational efficiencies and stable fuel supplies, contributing to a full-year profit growth of 15.4%. The Government of India remains a prominent promoter with a 51.10% stake, reflecting a balanced partnership between public ownership and institutional investor trust.
